In this podcast, Join Chef Lou sits down with Mark Blackwell, President of A Need We Feed.

From serving veterans, seniors, and families in need to the ongoing fight against hunger, discover the inspiring journey behind the mission and the impact of our dedicated team. Here’s how we’re making a difference, one meal at a time.

The Genesis of A Need We Feed

A Need We Feed started almost by mistake in 2012, right after Hurricane Sandy devastated the area. The barrier island was shut down, and the local community faced significant challenges. It was during this time that the past president of A Need We Feed ran into some first responders in a local restaurant. They were eating alone, away from their families for Thanksgiving. This encounter ignited a spark of compassion, and the past president invited them to his house for Thanksgiving.

This act of kindness became the Genesis of A Need We Feed. What was initially intended to be a one-time Thanksgiving meal for a few individuals quickly grew into something much larger. With the help of Chef Mike and other dedicated individuals, A Need We Feed organized a plan to feed not only the first responders but also the less fortunate in Ocean County. The organization received an overwhelming response from the community, with donations pouring in from restaurants, bakeries, and individuals. A fire truck was even used to transport the meals to the barrier island.

The Mission of A Need We Feed

The mission of A Need We Feed is to provide meals to the less fortunate in Ocean County. Our focus is on feeding veterans, the homeless, and anyone in need, without any specific guidelines or restrictions. The organization believes that everyone deserves a meal and is dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of those struggling with hunger in the community. While currently operating in Ocean County, A Need We Feed has plans to expand our reach in the future.

Impact and Success Stories

Since our inception, A Need We Feed has impacted the lives of thousands of individuals and families in Ocean County. Through dedication and hard work, we have provided nearly 250,000 meals to those in need. The organization started with a humble Thanksgiving meal for a few individuals and grew to host regular feedings throughout the year.

One success story that stands out is the sense of community and unity that has been fostered among the volunteers of A Need We Feed. Many of these volunteers, who didn’t know each other initially, have become like family. They vacation together, support each other, and are the backbone of the organization. Their commitment and passion for helping others are what drive A Need We Feed forward.

Collaborations and Partnerships

A Need We Feed has received immense support from both big companies and local businesses. Companies like Stop and Shop, Liberty Coke, Pepsi, and Gold Medal Bakeries have been generous contributors to the organization. Local businesses, including Burger 25 and Icarus Brewing, have also stepped up to support A Need We Feed’s mission.

The organization has formed partnerships and collaborations with these businesses, working hand in hand to make a difference in the community. The partnerships have not only provided financial support but also created a network of support that strengthens the impact A Need We Feed can make.

Future Goals and Expansion

A Need We Feed has ambitious goals for the future. While our focus is currently on Ocean County, we have plans to expand our reach to other areas, such as Monmouth County. However, expansion takes time and energy, and the organization is working on building a strong foundation in each area before moving forward.

The board members and volunteers of A Need We Feed are passionate about our mission and are committed to making a meaningful impact. We are continuously seeking new ways to engage the community and collaborate with other organizations to maximize our efforts in combating hunger.
